Soybean Ink on Paper

This body of work, was created by the artist using  Newspaper Soybean Ink donated by the Oakland Press from Troy Michigan to the artist in 2018.~ Mr. Navarro painted with this ink on large format paper to create 17 pieces at his art studio, the 555 Banner building in Detroit, Michigan.

The donation of Newspaper Soybean Ink from the Oakland Press came about as Navarro is always on the lookout for novel materials that can augment his artistic expression. The intense color and unique properties of soybean ink attracted him. This particular ink, typically used in newspapers, provided new textures and tones that he wanted to experiment with in his work. As a painter, Navarro thrives on experimentation with different media, including plastisol ink, house paint, acrylics, tempera, or any available ink. In his process, he allows himself to flow freely, guided by the narrative that the cosmos writes through him. Each art space and canvas size is determined in the moment, contributing to the uniqueness of each piece. Soybean ink, when used on paper, has the added advantage of drying faster, an aspect that facilitated his creative process despite the typically long drying time of this medium.
